Layout of Burning Man
The desert area that Burning Man takes up is very large, but well structured. Take a look at some of the most important parts of the layout.
Think of burning man as a circle, like a round clock. From 2pm to 10pm you have all the camps. In the dead center is the man and above it is the temple.
Is this layout big? F*ck yeah. It is more than 3 miles in diameter.
Let's start with the camping sections that you can clearly see above. It will be your home and big part of your adventure playground.
Most burners stay with placed camps. Many of those camps are longstanding, returning names on the playa. While there are always new camps and each one has to re-apply each year, it makes sense for camps to keep running due to the infrastructure many build up over the years. Think shared shade structures that get purchased, large event tents/barns, furniture, equipment for the activity offerings.... You might have already seen that camps are posting online in different places when they have availability for new burners to join this year.
Beyond placed camp areas, you have open camping and walk in camping. I was initially confused about the difference, but I would disregard walk-in camping for now. It will likely not apply to any of you. It's for people who will leave their vehicle further behind in a designated area and want a very quiet area.
Open camping is for anyone camping by themselves/with their friends or for renegade camps, who organized as a small group, but did not go through placement application. You can camp with any kind of setup in open camping, from tent to mega RV. You just drive in, find an open space you like and start setting up.
Initially I found this process a bit stressful, because I didn't know who was keeping an area 'reserved' for more friends to arrive, I drove through a whole section with clearly just gay men who didn't need me and some groups already looked rowdy at 9am. It seemed like a very important decision to find a good neighborhood that could determine how my week would go and doing that on no sleep after 26 hours of straight driving was a bit daunting. I ended up doing what everyone warned against - I plopped down right next to the porta potties. Best decision ever. They got cleaned so regularly, I never even got a whiff of anything and I had the shortest bathroom walk at night out of everyone. Recommend.
Generally speaking, the closer you get to the middle, the louder it gets. Unless your neighbors are party music monsters. Open camping was peacefully quiet, just a bit more cycling to get to the action.
On the map below from last year you can see how all the placed camps are mapped out and my squiggly yellow are the open camping areas. Everyone enters from the bottom / 6pm.

You will quickly learn that everything gets communicated in time on the clock and letter ring something (like your home) is located on. The most inner ring of camping is always called Esplanade. After that you have rings A-K, that get new street names each year in coordination with the theme. I wasn't the biggest fan of last year's street names, but love the ones that already got published for this year.
On the map above you can see that there are three medical stations (good to remember where they are!). Using this year's street name, those three will likely be on:
Esplanade 5:15
Chomolungma 3:00 and 9:00
You will get the hang of it. The more difficult thing about this is that the street signs very quickly ''disappear'' each year and I have definitely done some circles in the dark, because you can't figure out which street you're on even though you know where you're trying to go.
Now that we have covered the camping, let's look at the other important areas. Enjoy my marked up 2026 map and legend:
We found that the key to adult happiness isn't just about managing responsibilities, but about choosing the right diversions. Whether it's a gear upgrade for a new hobby or a last-minute flight to a hidden festival, the investment in joy pays dividends in memories.
Trash Fence: The pink upper boundary is an actual plastic net fence that the volunteers place before the masses enter. It is there to signal an end to the event area as well as catch flying trash so it does not enter the vast surrounding desert. It is quite a hike to get all the way out there, but there are often 'secret' art car link ups, random food pop ups, art.... venture out there and see what you can find ;)
Deep Playa: The purple area above the city is called the deep playa. It is a large area, contains a lot of art installations, but is less loud as you're leaving the center of the city behind.
Playa: The center piece of the map and the heart of serotonin inducing burning man energy. It is an open area with lots of art installations, the DMV, lots of music and happenings at night. Lots of bicycle traffic, great people watching and art cars coming by.
Burning Man: At the very center of the map stands tall 'The Man'. The Man represents a blank, universal human figure, open to interpretation, symbolizing self-expression, community, and the collective experience created by everyone there. The burn on Saturday is a ritual of release and transformation, marking a shared moment of letting go, celebration, and impermanence.
Temple: Above the man you will find the temple. Both the man and the temple will often serve as your visual guiding points during the week to triangulate which direction to go on the playa. The Temple represents a space for reflection, grief, remembrance, and personal meaning. People leave messages, pictures, memorials, and emotions they’re carrying. The burn of the temple on Sunday is quiet and intentional, symbolizing release, closure, and collective healing.
Potties: Last but not least - where are the bathrooms? Once we get closer, more detailed maps will come out, when you enter you will get a large physical map and there are 2-3 popular apps that work great as well. In addition, the potties have little (seriously, they could've put larger lights on them) blue lights that you can look around for. I was very pleased with the pottie management last year, even out on the playa.
